Heaton Park
Best time to visit
Late spring and early autumn offer the best conditions for exploring the grounds and gardens. Weekday afternoons are noticeably quieter than weekends, especially around the boating lake and golf course.
Budget tips
The park itself is completely free, with no entry charge for the grounds, playgrounds, or woodlands. Parking costs around £1.50 for two hours, and the tram museum charges just a few pounds for a ride on a vintage vehicle.

About
Quick facts: Spanning over 600 acres, this is one of Europe's largest municipal parks and offers panoramic views across Manchester from its highest point. A restored 18th-century neoclassical hall, a boating lake, and one of the oldest working tram museums in Britain all sit within its boundaries.
Highlights: The 18-hole golf course here was laid out by legendary course architect Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National, home of the Masters. You can play the same routing for around a tenner, which might be the best bargain in British golf.
Insider tips
- Head to the top of the hill near the hall for the best panoramic view of Manchester's skyline, especially at golden hour.
- The walled garden is far quieter than the main lake area, perfect for a peaceful picnic away from crowds.
- If you are driving, arrive before 10am on weekends to snag a parking spot without queuing.
- Tackle the 10-kilometer ParkRun route on Saturday mornings, it takes in the best scenery the grounds have to offer.
